Rochester Airport's Rising Passenger Numbers and the Quest for More Nonstop Flights
The Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport is experiencing a remarkable surge in passenger traffic, with 2025 marking one of its most successful years in over a decade. With nearly 2.8 million passengers, a 4.8% increase from the previous year, the airport is on a trajectory of continued growth. This positive trend has persisted into 2026, with traffic up nearly 4% compared to the same period in 2025. The airport's director, Andy Moore, attributes this success to the arrival of Breeze Airways, Avelo Airlines, and expanded service from Allegiant Air, which have introduced new destinations previously unavailable from Rochester.

Moore believes that attracting more airlines and flights could lower ticket prices through increased competition. According to the airport's 2025 report, Rochester's average airfare was $424, compared with the national average of $374. Lowering fares is a strategic move to make travel more accessible and competitive.
Rochester's cost per enplanement is $6.73, significantly lower than Buffalo's $12.70 and Syracuse's $11.76. This low cost makes the airport attractive to airlines, as it directly impacts their operating expenses. With ample capacity and a supportive environment, the airport is well-positioned to accommodate additional flights and routes, potentially before the end of 2026.
