How to clean different types of floors – carpet, wood, vinyl and more
Different types of floors benefit from different cleaning products and methods, which complicates things if you have different types of flooring throughout your home. You need to do more for your floor than just vacuuming up the dust. Author of The 15-Minute Clean: The Quickest Way to a Sparkling Home, Lynsey Queen of Clean (@lynsey_queenofclean on Instagram) reveals how to clean the most common types of floors in her blog.
The floors need to be mopped at least once a week, which is embarrassing for most of us who only ever mop the floor when guests come.
From vacuuming and dusting to washing and steaming, there are many methods to use… but you need to choose the one that suits the floor you have.
Cleaning expert Lynsey said, “You really should be using an individual product for each type of flooring you have.
“It sounds like hard work, but it will really bring out the true color of your flooring and it will also help bring the whole room together.”

Ceramic or even porcelain tiles are probably the easiest types of flooring to clean and maintain, according to Lynsey.
She explains in her blog: “If you’ve spilled something on the floor, all you have to do is clean it or spray it and the job is done.
“If you want to maintain your floor, however, a neutral cleaner is ideal for that.”
The main source of visual pollution from dirty ceramic floors is dirty grout, but it resolves easily.
Lynsey said, “If you make a paste with white wine vinegar and baking soda and use a small stiff brush your grout will be like new.”
Vinyl flooring comes in many different varieties, making it difficult to know which cleaning method to use.
Lynsey wrote on her blog: “Vinyl flooring is much easier to clean and it’s also very easy to maintain.
“If you’ve spilled something on the floor, you can mop it up using the same method above.
“However, when you do this you may find that it leaves its mark.”
Streaks are completely normal but if you want to get rid of them, consider pouring a mixture of white vinegar and water directly on the floor.
This will remove the streaks, but Lynsey warned that it could loosen the adhesive and increase your chances of sustaining floor damage.
She added: “Make sure you apply it in small amounts, but if your floor is already damaged, consider installing a new one.”

Hardwood floors are one of the prettiest floors on the market, but it’s not the easiest to maintain at all, Lynsey said.
She added, “You have to make sure you clean it regularly.
“You also need to make sure you protect the surface layer.”
To clean your hardwood floor, Lynsey recommends vacuuming it before applying liquid floor cleaner to loosen debris. Then use a dry wax applicator.
The cleaning expert explained on his blog: “It will really help you get the most out of your flooring and it will also help you really make it stand out as soon as you walk into the room.”
Carpet cleaning is not as difficult as you might think.
First, vacuum the carpet, then apply baking soda or something like Vanish to the carpet.
Spread the powder on the carpet with a soft bristle brush and brush it off.
Then vacuum the powder to reveal a clean, cool carpet.
