Mechatronics apprenticeship program back for Round 4

A fourth cycle of a program that teaches New Orleans-area students the mechanics of manufacturing and engineering has begun.
The apprenticeship program, led by GNO Inc., is between Elmer Chocolate, Laitram and Zatarain’s along with Delgado, Nunez and Northshore Technical Community Colleges.
The program provides companies with specifically trained workers, schools with market-appropriate curricula, and the region with a better-trained workforce, according to a press release from GNO Inc.
Originally announced in April 2019, the first graduates of the two-year program graduated in July 2021.
Applications for the fourth cohort are due May 13. Visit gnoinc.org/mechatronics to learn more about webinar applications and registration.
Mechatronics is an emerging branch of engineering that combines skills and knowledge in electrical and mechanical systems, electronics, robotics and control systems. Mechatronics workers are employed in many industrial settings, including energy, plastics, advanced manufacturing, and aerospace.
Apprentices earn a paycheck while learning the skills on the job and alternate between eight weeks working in the classroom and eight weeks at their company.
Program participants will gain experience in motor controls, basic machining (mill, lathe, drilling, tapping, etc.), blueprint reading, electrical and electronic system functions, and more.
